This book, entitled The City and the Value System: Social and Cultural Values between Social
and Urban Development and the Ethical Governance of the Urban Sphere, presents an in-depth critical sociological approach to a central problem: How are social and cultural value systems used—or marginalized—in the formulation of urban public policies and in managing the city as a space of shared living and quality of life?
The study begins by observing a clear gap in the Arabic literature between the abundance of studies examining the influence of cultural values on urban development at the level of the family or local community, and the scarcity of works that structurally connect the value system with the mechanisms of urban governance and public policies within frameworks of sustainable development and humanizing cities.
The aim of the book is to construct a critical theoretical framework that integrates the sociology of values, the sociology of the city, and the analysis of public policies. It does so by examining the relationship between social and cultural values and urban citizenship, quality of life, and the management of public space, while exploring the conditions of ethical urban governance in the context of globalization and digital transformations.The significance of the research lies in its contribution to addressing a conceptual and methodological gap. It moves beyond merely measuring the impact of values on certain dimensions of development and instead questions the institutional, legal, and planning structures that guide the use or exclusion of the value dimension in urban policies. This is undertaken in light of current debates on urban governance and the sociocultural dimensions of sustainable urban development.
